More Faces of Sepsis

Erin Flatley - tribute
By Carl Flatley (Erin's father)
Erin was 23 years old and going to have a surgery that is very common, but that people don’t like to talk about, a hemorrhoidectomy. This is supposed to be a simple out-patient procedure that provides a lot of relief, so it was planned that she would have it.
The surgery went as planned and Erin was discharged home into the care of her parents. Because there would be pain, Erin was prescribed Vicodin to manage it. Her doctor was going out of town, so she was given the covering surgeon’s contact number in case there were any problems.
Mason Jackson - tribute
By Susan Jackson (Mason's mother)
My son, Mason, died on December 7, 2009 at the age of 34. Mason was a healthy man in the prime of his life until a dental procedure. Mason lost a crown and made an appointment with a dentist he had never been to before as he had just relocated to Houston from Austin.
Tim Wykle - survivor
Two months prior to our experience with Sepsis, we had been through a battle of prostate cancer surgery with removal of the prostate and lymph nodes. We were scheduled to come back for an eight-week check-up, feeling good, and looking for good news and great outcomes.
Whitney Hamilton - survivor
Sepsis wasn't supposed to happen to me. I was 20 years old, married, a mom and had just given birth to my second child, an 11-week premature, 2 lb 12 oz, baby girl. Despite her being born so early, we were both doing great. She was sent to a NICU about three hours away and I was anxiously waiting to be released from the hospital that Saturday so I could go see her.

Darian Campfield - tribute
My sister, Darian Campfield, died Dec. 23, 2010, in her sleep. The autopsy report listed cause of death as sepsis. She was 31.
The morning of December 23rd, I had texted my sister to ask about Christmas plans. She never responded. She was always busy with her music, or work, so I didn't think much about it.
Tracie Storie - survivor
I, too, suffered from sepsis just last year at the age of 52. I was very lucky I had my beautiful daughter and husband insist on taking me to an Emergency room for a diagnosis.
My husband and I had been vacationing in England for a few days when I developed what I thought was cystitis. I went to a pharmacy there and bought an inexpensive over-the-counter medicine to treat the symptoms. It was not an antibiotic. The UTI was better for a few days. Then it flared up again, along with what I thought was a sinus infection for the last four days of our 2-week trip.
Averie Duke - survivor
On the afternoon of February 21, 2011, I received a call from my three-year-old daughter Averie’s daycare provider to come get her. I picked her up, she seemed ok, just a normal fever. When we got home, I gave her some Motrin. Within minutes she was running around playing with her sister & acting totally normal.
The next morning, her four-year-old sister woke up at her normal time and Averie was still sleeping. I told her to not disturb Averie. Let her sleep because she wasn’t feeling well and needed some extra rest. She continued to sleep throughout the morning. I went in and checked on her many times, and noticed she was hot, so I opened a window and turned on her fan.
Renee Cawley - survivor
The fight broke out over toys.
Renee Cawley was exercising six dogs in her Boise backyard when she ducked under an overhang to get out of the rain.
She brought a handful of toys with her. The dogs followed her, but now in close quarters, they suddenly were at each others' throats. Cawley responded instinctively - she reached down to pull them apart.
A petite woman in her 40s, Cawley had been bitten so many times during her work with aggressive dogs that she didn't think anything of the bites she got on Dec. 3. But two days after being bitten, Cawley felt disoriented. At the time, her fiancé, David Currie, had the flu.
