WSJ: Faster Care for Blood Infections

September 12, 2011

According to the Wall Street Journal, when fire department chief John Harris landed in the intensive care unit at Ohio State University Medical Center for two months last year, it wasn't due to the hazards of the 65-year-old's job. In fact, what ended with a life-threatening case of sepsis and multiple organ failure began with a small toe infection.

The article discusses how recent studies show the risk of death from sepsis can increase by more than 7% with every hour before treatment begins. The author, Laura Landro, also references the work that Sepsis Alliance is doing to help spread the word about sepsis, and features an interview with SA Board Member and critical care specialist, Dr. James O'Brien.
